Some Reflections on BIXI
I work near the Avenue Road and Bloor intersection in
downtown Toronto. Many tourists visit that area. The Royal Ontario Museum and
'5th Avenue of Toronto' are located there, as well as the University of Toronto
and the Royal Conservatory of Music.
Nearby is a BIXI Bicycle Station with 20 bicycle slots. On a
daily basis I see tourists and others gravitating to the BIXI bikes. Obviously,
they see it as an easy way to take in the sights. The University campus
especially lends itself to bicycle tourism, as does the Kensington Market and
Queen St. West.

Things I Learned at the Complete Streets Forum and the Ontario Bike Summit
I was fortunate to be able to attend both the Complete Streets Forum hosted by the Toronto Centre for Active Transportation (TCAT) and the Share the Road Cycling Coalition, Ontario Bike Summit earlier this
year.
It was inspirational, with success stories from cities that had improved
their quality of life by encouraging transit and active transportation.

Dawes Rd. Bike Lane Grand Opening
Come celebrate the official opening of the Dawes Rd. bike lanes this Saturday June 22 at 10am. The meeting place is the north side of Danforth Avenue and Dawes Road.
The ride is family friendly and will culminate with the Grand Opening of Dawes Crossing which is the new 'Living Art Structure' located at Dawes Rd. and Victoria Park Ave.
The opening of these east end (Ward 31) bike lanes are especially noteworthy considering that both Wards 35 and 36 removed the Pharmacy Ave. and Birchmount Rd. bike lanes in 2011. So come out meet some of your fellow east side cyclists and celebrate a positive Toronto cycling story this Saturday!
Sincerely,
Marvin Macaraig

Street Smarts-Safe Cycling Workshop at Taylor Memorial Library
The workshop will cover the benefits of bicycle commuting, basic bike maintenance, route selection, and perhaps most importantly provide useful tips and techniques for riding on the road.
The workshop is free, and all participants will receive a Toronto Cyclists Handbook and a Toronto Bike Map.
These Cycle Toronto workshops are well attended and incredibly popular (when held in other Wards) and there are a limited number of spots, so make sure you RSVP ahead of time with the library staff at Taylor.
See you there!

Welcome to our website!

Welcome to the Ward 36 Cyclists website!
Over the next few months it is our intent to use this space to help promote and advocate for safe cycling in Scarborough Southwest.
We know that there are a lot of cyclists in Scarborough and we think that if we come together, we can do some great things.
There is a lot of work to do in our communities and neighbourhoods, and we would love to hear your ideas and concerns.
Talk to you soon,
Ward 36 Cyclists
